New to Yoga? How to Choose Your First Yoga Class in Oceanside

Thinking about trying yoga but feeling a little nervous about walking into your first class?

You are not alone.

One of the things I hear from people who are new to yoga is that they don't know where to begin. They may worry that they aren't flexible enough, won't know the poses, won't be able to keep up, or will feel out of place.

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something: you don't have to get ready for yoga before coming to yoga.

At Oside Power Yoga, many of our members started exactly where you are.

Start Where You Are

You don't need to know the names of yoga poses or be able to touch your toes. You don't need to be particularly strong or flexible.

You simply need to start.

Our instructors are experienced in working with different levels of students and can offer modifications and props to help you find an appropriate version of a pose for your body.

And you don't necessarily have to wait for a beginner workshop or schedule a private yoga session before attending a regular class.

Choosing the right first class can make getting started much easier.

What Is a Good Yoga Class for a Beginner?

For someone completely new to yoga, Gentle Yoga is a great place to begin.

Gentle Yoga moves at a slower pace, giving you more time to become familiar with the poses, connect movement with your breath, and begin learning how your body responds to the practice.

If you're looking for something even quieter, Restorative Yoga gives you an opportunity to slow down and experience supported poses with the help of props.

Both can help you become comfortable simply being on your mat before deciding whether you'd like to explore some of our more active classes.

What If I Want More Movement?

As you become more comfortable—or if you're already active and want a more physical first experience—you may want to explore Vinyasa or Power Yoga.

Vinyasa Yoga links breath and movement through flowing sequences. It can be a wonderful next step if you enjoy movement and want to build strength, mobility and body awareness.

Power Yoga offers a stronger physical challenge and is a good choice if you're looking for strength, sweat and an energetic practice.

At Oside Power Yoga, our heated classes include options and modifications, and you're always welcome to take a break when you need one.

There is no prize for keeping up with the person next to you. Your practice belongs to you.

What If Heated Yoga Sounds Intimidating?

Not every class at Oside Power Yoga is heated.

We offer both heated and non-heated practices, so you can explore what feels best for you.

Our heated Power and Vinyasa classes provide a warm environment for students who enjoy a more active, sweatier practice. If heat isn't what you're looking for, Gentle, Restorative and other non-heated or warm options give you other ways to practice.

You don't have to choose one style forever, either. Part of developing a yoga practice is discovering what your body needs on different days.

Sometimes that might be Power Yoga. Another day it might be Gentle or Restorative.

Both count.

A Yoga Studio Without Mirrors

The environment matters when you're trying something new.

Oside Power Yoga is intentionally a no-mirror studio.

We want you to experience your practice by paying attention to your own body rather than watching yourself—or comparing yourself to someone else.

Our Oceanside studio is warm and inviting, with a small community feel. We have experienced instructors and a welcoming group of students, many of whom remember exactly what it felt like to walk into a yoga studio for the first time.

The goal isn't to already be good at yoga.

The goal is to give yourself a place to begin.

What Should I Bring to My First Yoga Class?

Keep it simple.

Bring a yoga mat, water and a towel. Arrive a little early so you have time to settle in and let your instructor know that you're new.

Most importantly, come as you are.

Ask questions. Use the props. Take the modification. Rest when you need to. Give yourself permission not to know everything.

That's how you learn.
